October marks Latin American Heritage Month, a time to honor the culture and contributions of Latin American communities to Canada. At TB Vets, we are privileged to celebrate this month by sharing the stories of two incredible individuals—Susana Williams and Vinicius Zanatta Coelho—who have brought their Latin roots and unique talents to enrich not only our organization but also the broader Canadian community. Their journeys reflect resilience, warmth, and an commitment to giving back, both to their heritage and to the country they now call home.
Susana Williams: From Caracas to Vancouver
“My name is Susana Williams, and I’m a working musician and experienced fitness professional. I emigrated from Caracas, Venezuela, to Vancouver, BC, in 1998, and although I’ve lived in Canada for over half my life, my Latin American identity remains a vibrant part of who I am. The warmth and passion of my Venezuelan culture have influenced me in every aspect of my life, from my work to my relationships.
When I first arrived in Canada, the West Coast quickly became my home. I’m incredibly grateful for the life I’ve built here—Canada has offered me the opportunity to create a family, grow my career, and continuously evolve. That journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but my tenacity, combined with the many opportunities this country provides, has allowed me to thrive.
I was first introduced to TB Vets through my sister, Isha, who has been a part of the organization for many years. In 2021, I became directly involved with TB Vets by teaching an online fitness class called ‘Get Up and Breathe,’ a program designed to serve TB Vets donors during the pandemic. This initiative allowed me to provide a fitness solution to the community when COVID-19 had closed down many physical spaces.
What resonates with me most about TB Vets is how it embodies the spirit of being Canadian—dedicated to helping others, committed to a mission, and always pushing forward despite the odds. Being part of this cause has not only allowed me to give back but has also reinforced the deep sense of community and belonging that makes Canada feel like home.”
Vinicius Zanatta Coelho: A New Journey
“Hello! My name is Vinicius, and I’m excited to share my journey with you. I moved to Vancouver in 2022 to pursue my MBA, and in mid-2023, I was fortunate to join TB Vets, an organization dedicated to improving respiratory care in British Columbia. My role here has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to work on impactful projects like the 50/50 raffle and the double match campaign, both of which have made a significant difference in funding life-saving respiratory care in BC hospitals.
As a Latin immigrant, adapting to a new country has been a challenging yet rewarding experience. I’ve faced moments of uncertainty, but I’ve also found a welcoming community here at TB Vets. The organization’s commitment to inclusivity, acceptance, and genuine care for others has provided me with a space where I feel valued and understood. It has also given me the chance to blend my own cultural heritage with the values of empathy and service that are so central to Canada.
Working with TB Vets has reminded me of how much we can achieve when we come together as a community, and how important it is to give back, no matter where we come from. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to causes that not only enhance lives but also resonate deeply with the principles I hold close.”
Celebrating Heritage, Strengthening Community
