In the vast landscapes of British Columbia, emergencies can strike. Miles Randell, a paramedic, knows this reality all too well. In his years of service, he faced the challenge of saving lives in the wilderness, often with the nearest hospital hundreds of kilometers away.
Miles’s personal stories
One particular incident stands out vividly in Miles’ memory. A friend went into cardiac arrest during a hike, yet he found himself hindered by ambulance service policies that prevented him from reaching the trail. Another time, a 24-year-old woman suffered a cardiac incident on a mountain, and once again, bureaucratic red tape threatened to delay intervention. Faced with such obstacles, Miles and his team made a decision – to temporarily rewrite the rulebook. This bold move led to the successful rescue of the young woman, but it also sparked a realization: there had to be a better way to address the gap in wilderness rescue services.
TEAAM History
From these experiences, Miles founded TEAAM (Technical Evacuation Advanced Aero Medical), a non-profit organization dedicated to wilderness rescue. With four bases established in British Columbia and one soon to launch in the Yukon, TEAAM fills a crucial void left by traditional paramedical and search and rescue organizations.
TEAAM’s mission received a significant boost when it partnered with TB Vets four years ago. Thanks to TB Vets’ support, TEAAM acquired state-of-the-art equipment, including a portable ventilator and a lightweight cardiac monitor. These tools proved invaluable during a recent mission to Las Vegas, where TEAAM’s expertise and equipment saved a patient’s life and brought them safely back to Canada.
The patient’s journey from Vegas to BC was a harrowing ordeal, but Miles and his team were undeterred. With the aid of the portable ventilator and cardiac monitor, they provided critical care throughout the grueling 17-hour journey. Despite the challenges, the patient received a life-saving heart transplant upon their return, defying the odds and reclaiming their health.
TB Vets Contribution
Miles attributes much of TEAAM’s success to the cutting-edge equipment provided by TB Vets. The portable ventilator is a game-changer in their operations, eliminating the need for manual ventilation and reducing the risk of muscle fatigue among medics. The lightweight cardiac monitor, with its advanced features, played a crucial role in diagnosing and treating the patient during their medical emergency.
“The equipment that TB Vets has given us is the best equipment out there – it’s the lightest, most rugged, and most useful,” Miles affirms. “It has saved lives in a very immediate and tangible way. It’s also made the work for our team much safer.”
As TB Vets continues to support organizations like TEAAM in their fight against respiratory disease, Miles Randell’s story serves as a testament to the life-saving impact of collaboration and innovation in wilderness rescue. Together, we can ensure that no one is left stranded in their time of greatest need.
