“I’ve always had a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Before starting school at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) I volunteered at many non-profits, including the Mustard Seed in Calgary. I love helping people from all backgrounds and demographics – I’ve helped with low-income populations who are waiting for housing, backpack drives for children, health literacy for immigrant women, and many more.
I chose TRU because of their outstanding Respiratory Therapy program and hands-on learning. I’m finishing my last clinical year, and I’ve learned that the skills I developed when volunteering at the Mustard Seed allows me the compassion and experience to better care for patients. One time a low-income patient who was being “difficult” was labelled as drug-seeking and denied medication. When I took time to actively listen, I found he needed pain management and advocated for him – and once he received the pain management his condition improved. It was rewarding to know I could make such a difference in his treatment.
I’m finishing up my last clinical year, and I’m excited to start working. Being a Respiratory Therapist aligns with my interest in health care, compassion, and commitment to lifelong learning. Receiving the scholarship from TB Vets has been a source of motivation and inspiration to pursue my dream, and relieve some of the financial barriers to my education. Once I graduate, I would love to give back by supporting future students in their clinical work. I’m grateful for the support from TB Vets, the RTs I’ve worked with, and the TRU professors. Thank you!”
