Littlest of Patients Receive Critical Breathing Equipment

Your TB Vets donations helped provide an urgently needed respiratory unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH). The machine is called a “BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) V680”, the ideal ventilator for frontline medical heroes to use with babies and children.

Previously, the hospital had had only five other non-invasive ventilators, but none of them were designed for the littlest of patients.

“The BiPAP V680 is the first BiPAP unit at ARH that is approved for use with pediatric patients. This capability is very timely, as we are seeing more pediatric patients with breathing difficulties being treated [here],” explains Mike McAllister, Clinical Practice Leader of Respiratory Services at ARH.

The demand for non-invasive units at ARH also exceed supply at times, especially during the winter surge. In these cases, standard machines are used but are not as effective. Having another respiratory equipment, and one that suits patients of every age, helps address this.

“The BiPAP V680 has been an essential tool for Respiratory Therapists at ARH. Having [it] means patients are able to quickly get the help they need and [it is also] essential in stabilizing these patients for transfer.”

TB Vets donors like you helped make this happen. Your donations ensure that patients—from newborns to the elderly— have breathing help available when they need it, right in their own community.

This respiratory grant from TB Vets was given to Abbotsford Regional Hospital through the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.*
